Judge Morrison England of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California has rejected the Justice Department’s request that California turn over information regarding California property transfers in connection with the federal gift tax compliance initiative. Judge England determined that the government failed to show that the information was not available through other sources (In re John Does, E.D. Cal., No. 10-mc-00130-MCE-EFB, 5/23/11).
